We can stand on a shoreline and feel the scale of the sea, but what happens beneath the surface often remains out of reach. Not because it is unimportant, but because it is difficult to capture, revisit, and lose.
Ocean Archive is our response to that gap. A long-term initiative by the Voice of the Ocean Foundation to preserve and share the images, film and data that show what is actually happening below the surface, so knowledge does not disappear with time, technology, or changing priorities.

OUR VISION
At Voice of the Ocean, our vision is clear:
Voice of the Ocean envisions a world where the ocean is understood, respected, and protected by all.
But understanding does not happen by accident. It happens when people have access to knowledge they can trust, return to, and build on.
Our mission reflects that belief:
Where ocean awareness and knowledge grow, meaningful engagement will follow.
Ocean Archive exists to support exactly that. It strengthens the foundation of ocean understanding, not only for specialists, but for everyone who cares about the future of the sea.
THE OCEAN IS CHANGING, BUT OUR RECORDS ARE FRAGILE
We are living through a period of rapid change in ocean systems. That change is physical, chemical, and biological, and it is unfolding on scales hard to grasp without long-term observations.
Yet much of what we know about the ocean is stored in material that is surprisingly vulnerable. It can be:
- analogue originals that fade or degrade
- logbooks that never became digital
- hard drives without backups
- file formats that become unreadable
- images and film that lose their context when metadata is missing
In other words, ocean knowledge is not only threatened by what happens in the water. It is also threatened by what happens on land: forgotten storage, obsolete technology, and information that never gets structured to last.

AN ARCHIVE IS NOT A MUSEUM. IT IS INFRASTRUCTURE.
When people hear the word "archive", they often think of something static. A place where the past is stored and left untouched.
Ocean Archive is the opposite.
It is a living resource designed to make ocean information usable over time. It is not about collecting for the sake of collecting. It is about ensuring that material remains accessible, interpretable and meaningful, even years from now.
Because without continuity, we lose the ability to compare.
Without comparison, we lose the ability to detect change.
And without evidence, we lose the ability to act with confidence.
WE GO DEEPER SO YOU CAN SEE MORE CLEARLY
The ocean does not always change in ways that are visible from the surface. Some of the most important shifts happen slowly, quietly, and out of view.
Ocean Archive helps bring those changes into focus. It supports two essential forms of evidence:
- Underwater photography and film, historic and contemporary
- Oceanographic datasets, including measurements and time series that support research and education
Together, they create something powerful: What you can see, and what you can measure. Feeling and proof. Curiosity and credibility.
This combination matters. Images can make the ocean real. Data can make the ocean understandable. And when those two meet, knowledge becomes something people can connect with and act on.
